The Marquette County Planning Division is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to help make the Grand Re-Opening of Little Trout Lake Park a memorable celebration for the entire community!

Join us on Saturday, June 13, from 12:00–4:00 PM at Little Trout Lake Park in K.I. Sawyer as we celebrate the transformation of this important community gathering space. The event will feature family-friendly activities, live music, vendors, a 5K run/walk, and opportunities for residents to reconnect with one another and experience the park's new amenities.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with a variety of activities throughout the day, including:

• Activity Centers support (such as bag toss, children's sand and water play, volleyball)

• General event support (directing attendees to activity areas, restrooms, and parking locations)

• Parking and Traffic Coordination Team to help visitors safely access the event

• Setup and Cleanup Crew (before and after the main event)

Volunteer shifts are flexible and can be scheduled anytime between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, allowing you to participate in a way that fits your schedule.

This celebration marks the culmination of years of planning, partnerships, and community investment to revitalize Little Trout Lake Park as a welcoming destination for recreation, connection, and community pride. Volunteers will play an important role in ensuring guests have a positive experience and helping showcase all that this renewed park has to offer. Help maintain the Ishpeming Middle School Garden and build new FREE Community Grazing Beds. Thanks to our community’s incredible support this past Giving Tuesday, we raised $8,645, enough to purchase 8 new FREE Community Grazing Beds and do some needed garden maintenance to the site.

Adults of all skill levels are welcome to roll up their sleeves and help out! Youth under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The planned activities will involve independently led tasks that require following specific instructions and may not be appropriate for younger children.

BIPOC Outdoors 5K @ Northern Michigan University

The BIPOC Outdoors Summit 5K, led by OEP in collaboration with Lance Woods, co-founder of WeRun313, is a signature event that promotes inclusivity, wellness, and outdoor engagement within the NMU community and beyond. This professionally timed race welcomes runners and walkers of all backgrounds and abilities, combining competitive elements like chip timing and awards with a strong focus on community, representation, and connection to the outdoors.

Want a behind the scenes look at the Marquette Fireworks? This is the opportunity for you! Help take down the staging area for the Fireworks. This job includes moving metal racks from the end of the Ore Dock to a barge, from the barge to a U Haul and from the U Haul to a storage facility. This volunteer opportunity is very physical and requires lifting 30+ pound equipment repetitively for the duration of the shift.

In the event of the fireworks being delayed due to weather, this opportunity will be rescheduled for July 5. 

Ever wondering what goes into setting up a fireworks display? Get a behind the scenes look by helping move racks during set up! This is the big set up day. Activities includes unloading the truck, and assisting the Great Lakes Fireworks pyrotechnicians with transporting the racks and fireworks shells out to the end of the Ore Dock via a barge. Note that this opportunity may end early, as a pyrotechnician license is needed to be on the dock once the boxes of shells are opened. Volunteers must be 18+ and able to lift 30+ lbs repetitively. 

Interested in learning more about commercial fireworks displays? This opportunity is for you! Assist the pyrotechnician team with preparing the fireworks racks. Racks will be loaded from their storage facility onto a UHaul and delivered to the Ore Dock structure. Because of limited parking, volunteers will carpool with the pyro team out the facility from the parking lot near the Dock. Volunteers must be 18+ and able to lift 30+ lbs repetitively. 

Interested in learning more about the Red Cross or getting trained for local disasters? The Red Cross will be providing hands-on training in opening and operating shelters. Adult Staff & Volunteers

All adult staff and volunteers must:

• Submit a completed Camp New Day U.P. Volunteer Application

• Provide three professional references

• Complete an ICHAT background check, including:

• Full legal name (including aliases or maiden names)

  • Date of birth

  • Race

  • Sex

• Follow all Camp New Day U.P. policies, including safety, boundaries, confidentiality, and camper conduct expectations

Volunteers Under 18

Volunteers under the age of 18 must:

• Submit a completed Volunteer Application

• Provide three professional references (non-family references preferred)

• Work under the direct supervision of an adult counselor or staff member

• Meet the same standards of behavior and professionalism as adult staff

Staff Training

All camp staff and volunteers are required to complete training prior to attending camp.

General Expectations

• All Camp New Day U.P. staff and volunteers are expected to:

• Uphold the mission of Camp New Day U.P. by providing a safe, supportive, and joyful experience for youth impacted by incarceration

• Model respectful, responsible, and inclusive behavior

• Maintain healthy and appropriate boundaries with campers

• Work collaboratively with fellow staff and volunteers

We are seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of tasks once the mobile pantry arrives. Volunteer duties include setting up tables, packing bags or boxes with produce items, loading food into vehicles, registering clients, directing traffic, and helping with other needs that arise.

The volunteer shift runs from 11:00-2:00pm, though some distributions may finish earlier. 

All necessary safety supplies- including gloves, sanitizer, and neon vests will be provided. Restrooms are available in the Berry Events Center. 

Please dress appropriately for all outdoor weather conditions, as events take place outside. We recommend dressing in multiple layers and bringing a drink/snack. 

Please note that this food distribution can be physically demanding and may involve bending, lifting, and twisting. If you are interested in volunteering but have any physical limitations, please be sure to notify a UPHCS team member on site. We will work with you to identify tasks that meet your needs and keep you safe. 

Location: NMU's Berry Events Center East Side Parking Lot: Corner of E Fair Ave and Pine Street (Marquette, MI). You will see the Feeding America truck and Feeding America directional arrow signs once you arrive.
